How do you work the first layer? How do you space 30 strands in 18 stitches?

Hi Handymommy,

Sometimes 2 strands are worked in 1 single stitch (like an "increase"). You either work a slst in the next stitch or in the same stitch at the end of the strand. When working in the same stitch, you in fact work the next strand in the same stitch as the previous one.

Enjoy crocheting!

Is there a tutorial or more photos of this process? I'm trying to figure this step out as well.

No, sorry, we don't have a tutorial other than the one in the book. The most important tip is: Read carefully. You can use a bright marker pen to mark if a stitch goes in the SAME or NEXT stitch.

I hope this helps.

At the end of each "strand" it will tell you whether you move to the next stitch or use the same stitch. Example: Strand 1-2 you will move to the next stitch after finishing the stands. Strand 3 you will use the same stitch as the previous strand. Just make sure you are paying attention to the strand you are on and the last part of each strand. "Slst in next st" or  "slst in same st". I struggled with this part as well and had to use trial and error to figure it out. Hope this make sense and helps.

I recommend charting out the 30 strands on graph paper in order to visibly represent where each strand falls around the 18 stitches.  For example - stitch one is strand 1; stitch 2 is strands 2,3; stitch 3 is strand 4; stitch 4 is strands 5,6; stitch 5 is strand 7; stitch 6 is strands 8,9; stitch 7 is strand 10; stitch 8 is strands 11,12; stitch 9 is strand 13; stitch 10 is strands 14, 15; stitch 11 is strand 16; stitch 12 is strands 17,18; stitch 13 is stands 19,20; stitch 14 is strands 21,22; stitch 15 is strands 23,24; stitch 16 is stands 25,26; stitch 17 is strands 27,28 and stitch 18 is strands 29,30.

I'm super confused. Do you start each strand in the stitches on the magic ring? I don't understand how 30 strands of hair are supposed to fit in 18 stitches. And when there's 2 strands in the same, do I just repeat the same pattern for it?
