Decreasing the head

Hello! I'm working on the head of the mermaid and I just finished attaching the eyes. Row #19 is a little confusing to me. I'm working the round with a stitch marker where my rows are beginning, and with the stitches this row is asking for, I can't make it work. Should I be using the stitch marker the way I am? Or should I just work the pattern and end it wherever it ends?

Hi LadyBugg, i believe you're referring to this part?

Rnd 16 – 18: sc in all 56 st [56]
Insert the safety eyes between rounds 14 and 15, with an interspace of 8 stitches, 4 stitches on each side of the stitch marker.

Rnd 19: sc in next 5 st, dec, (sc in next 4 st, dec) repeat 3 times, sc in next 6 st, dec, (sc in next 4 st, dec) repeat 3 times, sc in next 5 st [48]

Since round 18 ends with 56 stitches, you have 56 stitches to work on in round 19. You work 8 decreases in this round to end up with 48 stitches. If you read the round instructions carefully, you will see that this works out.

I hope this helps.
